This PhD project will seek to understand how common (non-biomarker) blood tests are currently used in primary care for cancer investigations with the aim of identifying opportunities to optimise their use for achieving earlier diagnosis.
The overall purpose of this study is to examine the diagnostic pathways by which people are diagnosed with lung cancer in Washington state. Examining the pathways to diagnosis of patients with lung cancer will help to answer key questions about individuals who are identified by recommended LDCT screening, those diagnosed through symptomatic presentation or through opportunistic diagnosis.

This multi-disciplinary PhD project aims to evaluate the association of pre-diagnostic thrombocytosis within the different histological subtypes of lung cancer using CRPD data sets with Cancer Registry linkage.
The project will provide new important knowledge of the clinical examinations conducted in the year prior to an abdominal cancer diagnosis, plus GPs’ interpretation of symptoms and referral practice and how to improve the diagnostics of abdominal cancers.
